How many of you were able to see Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer? (Raises hand) Now how many actually liked it? (Keeps hand down) As we know, 2006 was not a good year for the Man of Steel. Critics generally liked it, receiving 76 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes but only made a total of $391 million dollars worldwide after spending $350 million to make it. The creative forces at Warner Brothers are looking to reboot the franchise and are looking at a mastermind to do it. WB has asked Christopher Nolan to “godfather” the project. No details have been released about directors or actors, but is definitely a step in the right direction. For those of you who don’t know who Nolan is, (shame on you) he is the visionary director of such movies as Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
WB has asked Nolan to oversee the direction of the new Superman franchise, according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood. The Superman franchise has had a hard time getting off the ground since its great start in 1978, but I believe Nolan can take Superman into a much deserving story, with a true powerful villain that can contend with the Man of Steel. Also included in all this news is Nolan has come up with an idea for the third part to his Batman franchise. Being such a Batman enthusiast, this is great news. Hopefully, WB will give Nolan time to develop the story so we can get a great third film. What do you think? Can Nolan take Superman into the same class as The Dark Knight?
